I began writing these notes in 1999 intending them as a summary of the Patimokkha rules for my personal use. I was hoping for a brief summary to be read during the Patimokkha recitation. The summary expanded to become notes for teaching junior monks in 2004-2006, at which time I devised the 'points for discussion'. During this period I became interested in solving some of the problems of Vinaya, and the notes therefore became a research project. The solutions I offer address the theory of Vinaya, not the practical application.
The Pali references are mostly to PTS page numbers. It is the system used by the Vipassana Research Institute in their Chaṭṭha Sangāyana CD-ROM - the PTS page numbers are at the bottom right of each page.
